The Archaeological Resource Centre, York provides visitors with a fascinating opportunity to discover York’s history in an unusual way. It is actually a working archaeology unit but it provides visitors with a remarkable insight into the previous residents of the city as well as an opportunity to handle exhibits which are up to 2,000 years old. The ARC is housed in St Saviour’s which is a disused mediaeval church and has connections with the Jorvik Centre – joint tickets for both attractions may be purchased saving you a little money.
The centre reveals how much archaeology contributes to the discovery and understanding of history, by enabling visitors to try a variety of techniques for themselves and form their own conclusions about what life was like here in the past.
The ARC is in the centre of York and therefore does not have its own car park. The nearest public car parks are Stonebow House, next door to the ARC, Shambles (off Stonebow) and Piccadilly. However, if you are driving to York, we recommend you use the park and ride facilities. There are 4 park and ride sites situated on all the main approaches to York. These operate from sites adjacent to the A64, A19, A1079 and A166.
Situated on the East Coast Mainline, there are direct rail services to York from many of the UK's main cities, including a fast and frequent service from London King's Cross. The ARC is a 15-minute walk from York Station.
