Nightlife is dispersed throughout York, but popular clusters include the old Quarter and Micklegate.

There are healthy helpings of live music, culture and nightlife , much of it detailed in the local Evening Press (and on their useful website, ). Most bigger bands bypass the city in favour of Leeds, though the Barbican Centre pulls in its fair share of major mainstream artists, while the pub music scene flourishes. The annual Early Music Festival , held in July, is perhaps the best of its kind in Britain, with dozens of events spread over ten days - details are available on 01904/658338 or from the tourist offices. York is home to the famous York Mystery Plays.

York has its own brewery, which owns several pubs within York and these include the Last Drop Inn on 27 Colliergate, which also has live music by candlelight on Monday and Tuesday nights. The Black Swan on Peasholme Green, an atmospheric Tudor inn, has live music every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, with everything from jazz to ever-popular folk nights. If you can’t decide which pub to go to (York boasts a pub for every day of the year), why not pay a visit to Ye Olde Starre Inn on Stonegate, reputedly York's oldest?

For grown-up sophistication and fabulous river views, head for The Living Room, 1 Bridge Street. Oscar's Wine Bar & Bistro, 8 Little Stonegate, has a cosier appeal: inside is candlelight and cellar-like crannies; outside is a courtyard with year-round heating. For some laid-back fun, head for Evil Eye Lounge, 24 Stonegate, with its louche, lamp-lit rooms, plus broad range of cocktails and absinthe.
